Needle Materials & Their Edge

Acupuncture is a time-honoured therapy, and the needle is its heart. Today’s clinics rely on stainless steel—typically austenitic OCr19Ni9 wire. This alloy packs high tensile strength and springiness, stays straight and mirror-smooth, survives autoclave heat, and resists both rust and clinic chemicals.

Gold and silver conduct superbly, yet their thicker shafts are softer and far more expensive, so they stay on the shelf. Iron and plain carbon steel oxidise quickly, lose elasticity, and can break; except for the occasional magnetic technique, they’ve been retired. Stick with medical-grade stainless, and you give every patient the sharpest, safest route to results.
