Use must follow strict rules:
Sterilisation – single-use sterile needles must be EO-gas treated; reusable sets need a full 20 min rolling boil.
Procedure – check size and tip before insertion; reject any rust or barbs. While the needle is retained, guide the patient’s breathing to lower the risk of fainting.
Post-treatment – gently press the hole after withdrawal to restore local qi and blood. Reusable metal needles must be inspected regularly for metal fatigue.
Poor practice can lead to breakage or infection; silver needles, for example, are soft and should only be handled by qualified practitioners.
